(More customer reviews)Even though it was a bit scary to order furniture from the net, I went ahead with the order because no company in my area was selling fully solid wood frames (including the slates). Also Ramblin Wood offers a truly non-toxic finish which is important for chemically sensitive people like me. I am happy to say that I am fully satisfied with the materials and workmanship. It is a plain frame, as you can see in the picture, but old fashioned-high quality; I'm sure it will last a lifetime. It is not put together with nails or a staple gun which means there are no staples, nails, etc. visible on the outside. The one exception was some metal staples in the two support pieces under the center of each support beam. No one will ever see these.
The frame was delivered well ahead of schedule and came in 2 long boxes designed for easy shipping. This kept the shipping costs to a minimum. However, that meant more time to assemble the frame. It took me about 3 hours. There is a video on Youtube that shows a man building a similar bed that is helpful at: [...]
This product is made by Ramlin Wood: [...] I sent several emails to a man named Jim there and he answered all of my questions fully. I ended up getting a customized version that included extra height for both the legs and headboard and an extra set of slats (required by my wool bed manufacturer).
I normally buy from Amazon and have always been happy with their service and return policy. However, I did not buy it from Willy Goat because they didn't answer my email so I can't tell you if they are a good company to deal with or not.
I recommend Ramblin Wood and would buy from them again.
Update: Jim saw my review and sent me this clarification.
"One thing I should clarify is our use of staples on the rails. There are indeed staples that help hold the poplar ledger strips to the rails but the ledgers are actually GLUED to the rails. The staples are used to hold the ledgers firmly to the rails while the glue dries. We could somehow clamp the ledgers to the rails while the glue dries but it is significantly easier and more efficient to staple them."
