I am very disappointed with the actual look and feel of the ball. First of all, the recycle emblem is a bright "hazards ahead" orange color, not the mellow brown shown in the picture. The ball is not smooth and shiny - it is a dull, flat black reminiscent of extremely old tires. Slightly less petty is my complaint that the ball has a bad plastic smell that clings to my hands and fingers, and the plastic feels flakey to the touch - little black particles adhere to my hands and clothes when I handle this ball. Personally, I do not like this ball at all, and give it 1 star.

However, my puppy disagrees. In his short life span thus far, he's never been really interested in balls - his little tennis balls and soft plastic kitty balls only hold his attention for short periods. When I dropped this ball on the floor (in some disgust at the smell, I will add), he left the treat ball he was working on to dart over and snatch up this new rubber treat. He doesn't play with it for too long, but he definitely pays more attention to it than any of his other balls, and the periods he does pay with it are frenzied and happy - it seems he likes it. Perhaps he likes the smell that I find so unpleasant, I don't know, but he definitely gives this 5 stars.

I don't think this ball is unsafe, despite the plastic debris and chemical smell. Of course, I'm no expert. I don't think it would hold up long to intense play with a chewing dog - it's a pretty soft plastic all things considered. I'm giving it 3 stars since the puppy does like it, but there's no way I would ever, ever have paid $12 for this toy if I had seen it first.
